Overview

In the overview paragraph you should briefly describe major trends on your chart. You should describe from 2-4 key features.
Never write numbers, percentages or dates in the overview. The overview paragraph should contain only general information.
Key features should be:
  • Similarities - look the same
  • Differences - Compare
  • The highest point - Contrast
  • The shortest point - Contrast
  • Didn't change or flactuated.

Key features for our chart:

Similarities of 2 countries: Finland's rate has fluctuations . Sweden's rate has fluctuations.
Both Finland and Sweden show some fluactuations during this time period
Differences - Compare. How do their rates compare?
To compare rates of 2 countries we have to look at their rates at the beginning and at the end of the period.
Compare. At the beginning - Finlands's rate is lower than Sweden's rate. At the end - Finlands' rate is higher than Sweden's rate.
Now we can write an overview paragraph:
Overall, both countries' divorce rate had some fluctuations. Sweden experienced a downward trend, while Finland showed upward trend throughout the period. Although Finland initially had a lower rate, it outraced Sweden at the end of the period.

Feature Paragraph 1

When you are giving specific details, you have to write numbers and percentages and include as much useful detail as you can.
Let's look at the numbers:
Swedens' divorce rate:
  • was almost 45% in 2011.
  • rose to almost 50% in 2012.
  • gradually decreased to about 47% in 2013
  • decreased to almost 50% in 2012.
  • declined steadily to the end of the period, reaching around 45% in 2014
  • hit a low point of about 37% in 2015.
Now we can write a Feature 1 paragrapg:
Sweden’s’ divorce rate was about 45% in 2011, being higher than Finland’s rate by approximately 8%. Then, it rose to almost fifty percent in 2012. However, the figure showed a gradual decrease to about 47% in 2013, and continued to decline steadily to the end of the period reaching nearly 45% in 2014 and hitting a low- point of about 37% in 2015.

Feature Paragraph 2

Feature 2 - Present specific details about Finland
Percentage of divorce in Finland was less than 40% in 2011, and it decreased in 2012, when about one third of marriages in Finland ended with a divorce (as opposed to almost a half in Sweden). However, the figure experienced a steady growth during the next two years. It rose to approximately 39% in 2013, then increased by about 3% in 2014 and remained steady for the next year, outracing the rate of Sweden.

All the paragrpahs put together:

The bar chart provides information about the persentages of divorces in Finland and Sweden between 2011 and 2015.
